The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar wants to show as many people as possible the rich history of Alkmaar and other towns (Bergen, Castricum, Den Helder, Dijk en Waard (Heerhugowaard and Langedijk), Heiloo, Hollands Kroon, Schagen en Texel) in the province of North-Holland in the Netherlands. We try to use different ways to do that. For example, we have a lot of photo's in our online image library that can be downloaded.
Via the APIs below (Application Programming Interface) it is possible to gain free access to various collections.
Photos made by J. Elsinga. 15,715 images made by photographer J. Elsinga for the municipality of Alkmaar. Most of the photos were taken in Alkmaar in the period 1970 - 1990.
Collection Davidse. 547 pictures. A series of pictures made by mr. K. Davidse in 2009 and commisioned by the Regional Archive Alkmaar. Pictures are from different areas in the Dutch procvince of North-Holland.
Glass negatives Bonda. 148 photos made in and around the town of Bergen in the Netherlands between 1914-1926. These were made by the photographer Bonda. Here you can find the whole online collection. Also view and download the collection via Flickr Commons.

Collection glass negatives Den Helder 1905-1940. This collections consists of 436 scans of glass negatives from the towns of Den Helder and Huisduinen. Photographer unknown. Here you can find the whole online collection. Also view and download the collection via Flickr Commons. .
The pictures in the API are marked "no known copyright restrictions" and "public domain" This means that we are unaware of any current copyright restrictions on the works so designated, either because the term of copyright may have expired without being renewed, because no evidence has been found that copyright restrictions apply, or because we own the copyright but are not exercising that control.” You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar. The information in the API consists of a hi resolution image (jpg2000) and information about the catalog number, location, description, date en annotation.
When you use pictures from the above mentioned API we would appreciate it that you use our name as a source, but it is not compulsory.
In our online picture database you can find many pictures. A great deal of them you can download for free and without any restrictions.
The photos on our general Flickr account are available under a CC-BY-licence.
The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar participates in The Commons on Flickr with a special account to further its educational mission and to increase public access to its collections of images. The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar images that are part of The Commons on Flickr are marked "Public Domain" or "CC0". This means that the intellectual property rights have expired. You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar.
We also upload some pictures from our collections to Wikimedia Commons.
We have a data set available of our genealogical data. It consists of:
- population registers
- indexes to notarial deeds
- baptism, marriage and burial registers
- civil registry (birth, marriage en death)
These sets contain some 1,9 million names of people from the erea around the town of Alkmaar. The set will be updated from time to time so don't forget to regularely harvest the data. The sets can be harvested via OAI-PMH with this link:
The meta data and the linked images are marked CCO. You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar. We advise you to mention the source and date of the last harvest. When you use our data for something, please let us know, but it is not compulsory.
Important: from the 18th of February the 'gezinskaarten' en 'dienstbodekaarten' are not part of this set. More info (Dutch).
