The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar wants to show as many people as possible the rich history of Alkmaar and other towns (Bergen, Castricum, Den Helder, Heerhugowaard, Heiloo, Hollands Kroon, Langedijk, Schagen en Texel) in the province of North-Holland in the Netherlands. We try to use different ways to do that. For example, we have a lot of photo's in our online image library that can be downloaded. Check out www.historylab.nl (Dutch) for inspiration about what you can do with our data.
The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar also has an API (Application Programming Interface) to give you free access to some of our collections. This API has been made because of our participation in an Open Cultural Data (Dutch) initiative in the Netherlands. The collections are:
Collection Jan Ponstijn. 362 pictures (glass negatieves and drawings) made by artist Jan Ponstijn (1883 - 1970) from the town of Bergen in the Netherlands.
Collection Heritage of the war. 1177 pictures (photos, poster,s newspaper articles, letters etc.) that deal with the Secons World Wat in Alkmaar and surrounding area.
Glass negatives Bonda. 148 photos made in and around the town of Bergen in the Netherlands between 1914-1926. These were made by the photographer Bonda. Here you can find the whole online collection. Also view and download the collection via Flickr Commons.
Collection Bosboom -Toussaint. 732 pages from the 'Album Amicorum' (1882) that were made for the seventieth birthday of the writer Anna Louisa Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint. The collection consists of lose pages with drawings, watercolors, photo's, texts and musical pieces. Here you can find the whole online collection. Photos from Alkmaar 1860-1900. 373 photos made in Alkmaar between 1860 en 1900. These were made by photographers like Van der Aa, J. Chrispijn, P. Vlaanderen and L.A.A. Perrin. Here you can find the whole online collection. Also view and download the collection via Flickr Commons.
Collection glass negatives Den Helder 1905-1940. This collections consists of 436 scans of glass negatives from the towns of Den Helder and Huisduinen. Photographer unknown. Here you can find the whole online collection. Also view and download the collection via Flickr Commons. .
The pictures in the API are marked "no known copyright restrictions" and "public domain" This means that we are unaware of any current copyright restrictions on the works so designated, either because the term of copyright may have expired without being renewed, because no evidence has been found that copyright restrictions apply, or because we own the copyright but are not exercising that control.” You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar. The information in the API consists of a hi resolution image (jpg2000) and information about the catalog number, location, description, date en annotation.
When you use pictures from the above mentioned API we would appreciate it that you use our name as a source, but it is not compulsory.
In our online picture database you can find many pictures. A great deal of them you can download for free and without any restrictions.
The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar participates in The Commons on Flickr with a special account to further its educational mission and to increase public access to its collections of images. The Regionaal Archief Alkmaar images that are part of The Commons on Flickr are marked "Public Domain" or "CC0". This means that the intellectual property rights have expired. You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar.
We also upload some pictures from our collections to Wikimedia Commons. You can find them here.
We have a data set available of our genealogical data. It consists of:
- population registers
- indexes to notarial deeds
- baptism, marriage and burial registers
- civil registry (birth, marriage en death)
These sets contain some 1,9 million names of people from the erea around the town of Alkmaar. The set will be updated from time to time so don't forget to regularely harvest the data. The sets can be harvested via OAI-PMH with this link:
The meta data and the linked images are marked CCO. You can use them for commercial and non commercial works without premission from the Regional Archief Alkmaar. We advise you to mention the source and date of the last harvest. When you use our data for something, please let us know, but it is not compulsory.
